Pressure support ventilation (PSV) also known as Pressure Support: PS | Augments the spontaneous breathing efforts of the patient with a specific amount of airway pressure that the doctor determines. Unlike VC, or PC, in Pressure Support mode the patient initiates the breath and sets his or her own breathing rate, or respiration rate. PS or PSV (pressure support ventilation) can be used to decrease the work of a breathing patient that is being weaned from mechanical ventilation. In GE’s PSV Pro, Pro stands for protection, which means the ventilator will kick in and deliver breaths to the patient, if no breaths (apnea) are detected. Drager also has apnea protection in their PS mode.
